An Old Store

When we first found the old store building that is now Morlanow, it was used as two garages. We heard snippets of stories of its original use and landed on a stable, with horses in the top section and cart store and hay loft in the lower. It had since been used to store bits of old carpet, rope, wood and apparently at somepoint an E-Type Jag.

The store buildings originally belonged to Bellefield House, a captains house on Woodlane, before the plot was split into three. The exact build date is hard to pinpoint as they were never really buildings in their own right. We have a Tithe Map from 1841 where Florence Terrace and Woodlane are nothing but fields and a 1861 map with half of our building on and most of Florence Terrace unbuilt.

This puts it at around 170 years old. The few artefacts we’ve found have added to the vagueness of construction date- newspaper dated 1947, Victorian medicine bottles and a plastic Rodda’s clotted cream pot buried deep in the oldest bit of wall.
